I published my first book twenty years ago. Ever since, I’ve been writing biographies like this one, wondering how much should I say? How boastful should I sound? And do you want to hear about Matthew in the third person?
My brief life story is that I was a long-ago expert in web programming and the .NET stack, for which I was a many-time Microsoft MVP. I wrote books for almost every tech publisher in existence (and many that aren’t any more), including O’Reilly, Apress, No Starch, Microsoft Press, Wrox, and Osborne McGraw-Hill. What was that like? I’m glad you asked.
I’ve also written about the human brain and how to teach programming to kids. And I ran a Medium-partnered publication that featured hot takes on software design. You can still find me there every once in a while, posting about the impending catastrophes of AI.
Well this is embarrassing. Somehow, I’ve let many years pass without indulging my most creative, whimsical, and absurd ideas.
So let’s fix that. My first story in a very long time, How to Deal with Fallen Gods, will be published in the May 2026 issue of Cosmic Horror Monthly. In the meantime, you can enjoy a couple of smaller pieces right here: Deep Channels, and If Not an Algorithm.
